I've noticed that the filter cover is restrictive. You could drill some holes on the back face of the cover. Also Spooky Tooth sells a unifilter that'll give it more air.

I got a new carby and it won't run with out the cover and air filter off, with it off it doesn't go lean or too rick so can it do any damage?

Thanks
This is like asking if the bike would run better with a velocity stack, if it works on car Individual throttle bodies then why wouldnt it help make more power on a single carb?

I have the stock black plastic air breather and I drilled four holes in the area around the mounting screws. I wasn't correcting a problem, however I do feel a difference.

Not exactly...he's asking if running with the right mixture and no air filter is a good idea..... it isn't.

Any engine will run better with a less restrictive intake or exhaust if it is tuned correctly.

But would a velocity stack improve the perfomance of these engines?

Never run with the air filter off. Dirt and dust will enter the motor and grind up the piston and rings. There are some roads where I live that have granite dust and will ruin any motor in just a few miles. Always use an air filter. Enjoy the ride....

Velocity stacks are used by racers who expect the most out of their motors for short periods of time. Race 2 strokes need completely rebuilt about every 10 hrs of run time and get top end attention more often than that. Most people I've known to race 2 strokes use filters even a drag racer I knew. That Unifilter Spooky Tooth sells is a race quality filter.

Yes, and these aren't race engines either....their "performance" is defined by low cost transportation and ease of maintenace.

Not mpg, not mph.
