This morning I saw in the news a story about a storefront in New York where they have live models changing clothes in the window. They're wearing relatively conservative underwear but still! I'm not particularly prudish but I think at Christmas time you should be able to take the kids downtown to marvel at the Christmas decorations and window displays without having to steer them around a bunch of horny guys crowding around one window. That's just wrong!

Not to start a ruckus... but I've often wondered about conservative views and concerns such is this, you would take your kids to the beach would you not? Perhaps the leering eyes aren't clustered as closely together as they are in the mall - but you can bet they're still there.

I find it particularly interesting that it was the "horny guys crowding" that seemed to be the point of offense and not the flesh display itself... yet "prudish" was mentioned, so what would you rather - no skimpily clad females or better public manners on the part of the males?

I'm just idly curious mind - there's no "right or wrong" regarding such things, but I've often thought Americans to be disproportionately concerned about such things, particularly given how much smut we spew out in the media *shrug*

Of course my "morals" may be a touch questionable when it comes to women and clothing (the lack thereof actually) lol I'll be the first to admit that ;)
 
I just think that people should have a choice of what they and their children view. The news story said it was right near Macy's in NYC which means it is the heart of the shopping district. When you take your kids to the beach you know what they will see and you choose to take them. If you want to take them to a nude beach that is fine by me as long as it is your choice. But this display is right in there with all of the more traditional Christmas displays.

So I would say it offends me because it takes away the parents choice. It is kind of like putting a strip club in the middle of a residential neighborhood. I guess I also have the view that Christmas should be a child oriented holiday.
 
i dont think nuditys wrong, even if the models were 100% nude, as long as its not porn or anything, we were born nude, in the first years of evolution we were nude, so whats wrong with that?
 
I'm not saying the subject matter is the problem. I just don't like the time and place they are presenting it in.

I don't have any kids so sometimes such distinctions escape me... I sometimes think just a mall is awfully similar to havin' a strip club in the middle of a residential neighborhood, that pimps and Santa Claus aren't terribly different... but I get like this when I'm tryin' to buy some useless plastic thing amongst the hoards of frenzied others lol

"Morality" is such a hard thing to define, let alone enforce... I'm not really qualified to have an opinion as again, I am childless - but I do wonder that if I were a father, would these values I currently hold cause me to avoid exposing them to such a "vulgarity" as a commercial Christmas yet not have any aversions about walking past a bunch of underwear models?

*shrug* There's only one way to tell and I'm not sure I'm up for the commitment - but judging from the countless friends I've had whom subtly yet profoundly changed outlooks and priorities almost overnight due to their firstborn... I'd most likely be singing a different song pretty quick :)
 
OK, Linnex let me try this. Suppose you were really into classical music and you went to a con dedicated to classical music orchestras, publishers, etc. Yet for some reason a purveyor of Death Metal had set up a booth in the middle of it all and was blasting their product loudly. Wouldn't that annoy you? Nothing wrong with Death Metal, it just doesn't belong in that place. That is the point I'm trying to make. Of course that is based solely on my opinions.

Naturally I believe that everybody has a right to my opinions! :p

i see what you mean, in the way you put it, it makes scene, but you cant devert your ears from death metal when your trying to listen to classical, but if your in a mall, its easy to just divert your eyes, and forget about it,

Well put young man. That has been my argument about such things for a very long time. There is a groupe in Denver that has been trying for years to get a giant lighted cross removed from the side of a mountain west of town. To them it is offensive. I once called the leader of that organization and asked him why he just didn't turn his eyes away from that cross when it was in view; better yet, keep his eyes on the road.Then I gave him this example: I personally do not like basketball. I think it is a stupid mindless game played by overpaid steroid users. But, I don't try to get basketball banned from TV. Why? Because many people love the game so...I just don't watch it...What's the difference? I'm not making a judgement call here (certainly not toward FinFan) or preaching against morality. To each his own. But I do object when people try to push their morality on others and change things to suit their standards. Live and let live is good advice. If you don't like it...don't look at it.

Well, don't have kids... but my view on this matter is that it's better to have proper guidance than restrictions. With restrictions people tend to find a way to do it, but with proper guidance, it will be coming from oneself which one to avoid, and which one is proper. Reality is that you can't be with your kids forever, and there comes a time when your kids would have to face the realities of life.

I think those guys cluttering the window probably had only restrictions in their childhood but were not given proper guidance by their parents or guardians.
 
What was the original purpose of the "display"? If it was to bring attention to their business, mission accomplished. I don't give my business to companies that offend me or give bad service. I don't go to Pep Boys any longer because of how I was treated once. I like the store and prices, but that incident can not go without respo0nse from me.

I would avoid a business if they offended me. What if everyone made farting noises when greeting you? nothing wrong with farting noises. it's natural. Everyone farts. But if you don't want that kind of thing, let them know you will not be shopping there until they change that policy. Jim
 
No. Pep boys treated me bad for car service. The farting thing was an analogy. I got a good laugh out of the thought though... I'd want to work there if they could get away with that on a regular basis.
 
My wife is pregnant with our first now. I guess I don't understand the problem with nudity either. I spent about a year in Italy and other parts of Europe. The perception there is completely different. Topless on the beach or in a swimming pool was not uncommon, and no one really paid that much attention to it, except for me. I was not used to it! If we didn't try to hide so much from our kids, they might not be so curious as teenagers-adults. As I said, I don't have any children yet, so my opinion may change. I know when I was a kid, my parents tried so hard to hide everything from me. It didn't really work. Most kids know a lot more than we want to realize. In Italy, every night, soft porn came on almost every channel on tv that you could pick up with rabbit ears. 30min of porn and 30min of used car sales over and over all night. I'm not saying that is right, I just wanted to throw that in for those of you that might not have been there. Late night tv is good 30min at a time.
