Is there a specific way to install piston rings so they function properly--does it matter as long as they're on correctly? Do I oil up the cylinder prior--do I break-in the engine again?

There is no up or down on the rings..look at the ring to make sure. There are two pins one in each grove, the pin HAS to go between the ring ends.

...
Light coat of oil will work, same oil you mix with the fuel. I'd ride it easy the first tank..set the rings in, but that's me.

actually, because there is a pin there there IS an up and down. you need to make sure that the ring at its gap is flat side down and the rounded part that goes against the pin is up. to re-install you MUST have the gaps at the locator pins, then you just squeeze with your fingers and slide the cylinder on, squeeze the top ring, slide it on, squeeze the second ring, slide it on, then you're good :)
