Why presta?

I probably missed any discussion on this topic but, why do presta valves exist?(?) Is there an advantage to using them? What am I missing?

I suspected prestas were mostly used on skinny rims. I have one presta equipped tube on the Whizzer which means I now must carry or attach an adapter. I bent the dang ding dere when I first fumbled with it.:(
