Jefferson County sheriff's guys have all been cool to me too. They patrol our neighborhood quite often and I've stopped and talked to them. They never bring up legalities but ask about the bike, "how much, how fast, how many miles to the gallon, all the normal questions.
It's too bad there are always those who adopt that "I'm the Authority" attitude when they pin on the badge. Funny but it seems small, greedy little municipalities attract that kind of people for their law enforcement needs. Greenwood Village is another example. They used to patrol the parking lots of commercial office buildings ticketing cars with expired emmision stickers. Nice way to generate revenue. I've never ridden one of my bikes there but I can only imagine how they would respond.
