washers on rear tire hub bolts

can you safely use washers to spread the frame away from the rear hub?
im thinking 1 or 2 washers on each side, as im lightly rubbing the chain on the frame
top and bottom of the rear tire gear,
but can't move the cnc hub back any because im chain-slapping on the tire on the other end of the chain
I NEED MORE ROOM
so i figure ill spread the frame a little
with washers,
but wonder if ill make the hub-bolts unsafe

OH its a cranbrook frame
husky rims--front drum brake, rear coaster brake removed, frame brake added
2 stroke kit,

Yes you can spread with a couple washers on each side. Here's a Cranbrook I built last year. With Husky Rims and front Drum. I changed out the 2.25 tires for 1.95 and solved driveline issues.

As long as you have enough threads left for the nut to fit securely. The axle should at least reach to the end of the nut.

I've used longer axles and an extra nut for a spacer on the inside before.
