That's the best idea, George. Read and research through the threads. If you don't mind spending the money then the expansion chamber is the way to go. If you do go the chamber route then, again, do your reading to make an informed decision. Stay away from the "toy" ones. Two good "bolt and go" pipes that come to mind are the Sick bike and the crmachine modified voodoo pipes.

A well tuned X-pipe is THE most impressive power increase you can get from one thing.

Interesting.
I suppose it doesn't matter where the burnt fuel exits so long as it does not disrupt the shock wave forcing all the fresh fuel back in.
That's the basic idea... most of the noise is in line with the port so the shock wave can even carry more energy toward refilling the cylinder in a really well tuned side bleed system but by tapping into the belly section, the gases can still escape unrestricted but the noise is mostly trapped inside the chamber so it can be put to work, a well tuned side bleed will be about 50 to 80 percent quieter than a comparable end bleed. This doesn't mean it don't need a muffler but it does mean you can be very quiet and still have a free flowing setup. A typical side bleed without a muffler will be quieter than an end bleed with one if using a high performance straight thru type muffler.
There are some really effective silencers for dirt bikes like the supertrapp type pipes with the multiple wafers with a covered end cap which can cut the noise way down without restrictive the flow, and on most dirt bikes this whole assembly is enclosed in a canister which cuts the noise even more while keeping the flow free.
