Shimano CBE 110 axle problem

Ok, I have searched this site as well as the the 'net and I cannot find the beast I need. I always try to search before asking.

I am fabricating a custom exhaust for my Atlas and I need a longer axle to fit my Shimano CBE110 rear wheel. The current axle is 3/8-24 by 5 3/4" long.
Apparently a 3/8-24 axle is a bastard size in the internet bicycling world?
I need one at least 6 1/2" long and I do not trust using all thread as I believe that it would bend under the stresses of engine power. I know that standard bicycle axles are hardened CrMo steel and all thread is basically shiny bubblegum metal.
Can anyone help me out? Suggestions?
