new throttle cable

Does anyone know how much longer the actual throttle cable should be compared to the sheathing in order for the throttle and carb to work?

The best way to shorten a cable is to start with a stock cable and shorten the housing and cable equally, you can then resolder a end on the cable. I think there is a thread on repairing cables in the classic posts.
