Need advise for newb!

Thinking of diving in and getting my first engine kit. I am looking for thoughts and advise. First off I am a complete newb. Never ridden a motorbicycle before. I am an experienced motorcycle rider and an avid gear head. Been wrenching on vehicles most my life.

First question. Are their kits out there good enough to be true daily commuters? I do only commute 8 miles round trip.

Second.(If so) Which engine kit would be good for this purpose, with a focus on quality and reliability? I know there are a lot of options. I don't want to necessarily say 'price isnt an issue' but I am willing to buy a high quality kit if it fits the bill.

Third is there anything in particular about a donor bike that would make it better than another? Any types of donors to avoid?

Welcome to the forum, I've bought engine kits from the companies on the sides of this forum and I've bought from eBay, I've had good luck with all. I recommend you chose a established company that carries replacement parts that you may need. The best ride is from large tire bikes, with beach cruisers being the easiest because of the large area to mount the engine. Add a front side pull bmx brake and you'll stop well. The 48cc engine is much smoother than the 66cc, I think the 48 is balanced better. The 66 is faster, the choice depends on what you want.
 
So are there kits that are considered better quality or are they all pretty much the same? I'm not necessarily talking about 'performance', I'm more interested in reliability and quality.
 
Unless you need to go fast or have big hills go with a 50cc. They are smoother and start easier. Find a donor bike that has suspension front forks, makes a huge difference if you are going to commute on it. I built two, one on a Walmart Roadmaster and one on a single speed fixie from Big Five. I had to put some suspension forks on the fixie because it shook my teeth out.
