mystery scooter engine chain drive

hello!

first time builder here...tonight I picked up a free engine from a buddy of mine, a small sticker on the side says 43cc scooter engine.

the engine has a centrifugal clutch and is pull start...also the air intake is missing a piece i think

as you can see from the pictures its very wide, making the shaft extend far past where the sprocket will be placed. to make it come close to aligning i'd have to be placed verrrrry far off center.

i'll be using a mountain bike, it fits fine aside from the width.

one of my priorities with this project is that i'll be able to pedal so i need clearance.



so questions,

a. is it worth it to use this engine? im a first time builder, am i getting in over my head?

b. will this engine be faster than a 66cc china girl? more reliable? i'm looking for the ability to tackle some hills as well



c. would a rear mount be a more elegant solution?
 
since its got a centrifugal clutch does that mean if i do a friction drive there will be no resistance if i were to pedal with the engine off?
 
There will probably be transmission drag if you pedal, how much, I don't know. The reason for the engine being wide is you have what I think is a reduction gearbox fitted to bring the revs down so you only need 1 stage of reduction after it to drive the back wheel.
 
looks like a good candidate for a jackshaft and a rear mount.there would be more fabrication compared to an engine kit.
something you need to know is the ratio in the gearbox.
 
That engine has a 5:1 reversing gearbox. The output shaft turns opposite of the engine rotation. It also has an electric starter behind the pull starter. This is another reason the engine is so wide.
A buddy of mine built a rack mount with one of these, with the engine running a freewheel sprocket on the pedal crank, and he used the derailer gears. Runs great,but It is not as powerful as the 66cc HT engines.
 
i had the same motor for my first motorized bicycle
it used the scooter rear end and was geard up

the motor is really wide

but its ok because it can generate its own 12V current with the generator

mine was slow i built it for a past girlfriend
