As a gear head I saw a lawn mower that was tossed and only needed a magneto. With 14 dollars on Ebay got it running but it is only 4.5 hp Briggs vertical shaft drive. This could maybe be the lift engine if using two engines. I have a 3 hp Briggs horizontal (side shaft) needing some work that could be the propulsion engine.
Aside from a place to work when it is cold soon and to keep it store from weather, I'm maybe biding my time to get at doing this some time in the future. At least I find it interesting so am hopeful.
I saw a new engine in the kit with all the other stuff you can buy all at once to build a hover craft. It was only 100 dollars less if you omit the engine.
Maybe saving from scrap, this tossed Briggs may be just to mow lawns instead. Its a self propelled mower.
In any case some kits sell the 6 and 10 hp engines that are use on the one person hover craft designs and am pondering this all.
They in some designs duct a 1/3 of the lift of a vertical shaft engine fan force horizontally for propulsion. This way it is that only one engine is used.
Working with molds of foam to fiberglass it to make a duct for the fan blade and wood working might be fun. The props can come already partially or fully finished.
I thought where you use it. Loose gravel can be dangerous, so water or a meadow would be places sought I think. I saw a video where using one in unpacked powder snow there was like zero viability and the venture was aborted.
Keeping the dream anyway. Maybe a robot self propelled lawn mower as another not quite hair brain skeem with the mower needing a little work, if nothing else?
