Hovercraft DIY possibly in the works

MEASURE TWICE

As a gear head I saw a lawn mower that was tossed and only needed a magneto. With 14 dollars on Ebay got it running but it is only 4.5 hp Briggs vertical shaft drive. This could maybe be the lift engine if using two engines. I have a 3 hp Briggs horizontal (side shaft) needing some work that could be the propulsion engine.

Aside from a place to work when it is cold soon and to keep it store from weather, I'm maybe biding my time to get at doing this some time in the future. At least I find it interesting so am hopeful.

I saw a new engine in the kit with all the other stuff you can buy all at once to build a hover craft. It was only 100 dollars less if you omit the engine.

Maybe saving from scrap, this tossed Briggs may be just to mow lawns instead. Its a self propelled mower.

In any case some kits sell the 6 and 10 hp engines that are use on the one person hover craft designs and am pondering this all.

They in some designs duct a 1/3 of the lift of a vertical shaft engine fan force horizontally for propulsion. This way it is that only one engine is used.

Working with molds of foam to fiberglass it to make a duct for the fan blade and wood working might be fun. The props can come already partially or fully finished.

I thought where you use it. Loose gravel can be dangerous, so water or a meadow would be places sought I think. I saw a video where using one in unpacked powder snow there was like zero viability and the venture was aborted.

Keeping the dream anyway. Maybe a robot self propelled lawn mower as another not quite hair brain skeem with the mower needing a little work, if nothing else?

2 Kewl, MT! Really looking forward to seeing what ya do.

Just a thought. They seem so unwieldy in water. I always thought a sweep ore, like a rudder but used like a weed whacker outboard would fix that eaisly and be easily taken out of the way for maneuvers?

Dunno, just a thunk. Build something cool!

What sort of usable land/water do you have access to? One thing I saw a picture of years ago was a French prototype Low Ground Pressure truck, driven and steered by wheels, but with the load spread by an air cushion.

I would look for use on lakes where motor boats are allowed. Maybe inside protected harbor if near the ocean. Bays on calm days. As for the lawn mower engine it runs well and I got the adjustable height for wheels and self propelled wheels working. Its a keeper for the future where I may have a lawn I could hover around on to test hovering. My guess if I go and look at Universal Hover Craft kits with engines included or some other plans or kits, I would get a new engine. Seems I kept from using any new engines for my motor bikes, so maybe this will be a change should I be finding a place to work on a Hover Craft indoors comfortably or when Spring arrives. I just had to put an orange tree inside. It could have been almost too late this year. Was out spraying water on it to keep the half wine barrel planter with the dwarf Valencia Orange Tree in it from freezing early at 3 am and again at 8 am in the morning. So far low 20's.

A Scottish firm called Denny experimented with a hybrid sytem ferry. There were rigid side curtains going down into the water, and an air curtain at the bow and stern. Less power needed for the lift, and not a lot of drag created by the side walls. The downside is it's a fancy technological boat, but still restricted to only being a boat.
