homemade generator?

Ok - first let me say that that im completely uneducated about this! But i really want to make something like this:

For my bike - but cannot see myself plunking down ~30 for a coil. Is there any way that I could make my own? I can image you could just copy their mounting style and make your own coil with copper wire? Heres what im wondering:
-What material for the core; wood / metal / plastic / conductive or nonconductive?
-What gauge wire for the windings / how many windings?

You could attempt to copy that design, but there are two things. One, you'll need a machine that can wind the coil. Two, it may take several attempts to get it right. Not saying that it can't or shouldn't be done. If you have everything you need and want to try, have at it. Just want to point out that its worth it to buy the coil. I had one on my two stroke bike, and it worked very well. You won't be disappointed if you spend the money to buy one. It doesn't interfere with the ignition at all. The seller claims a slight drop in hp, but its so small as to be negligible.
 
The core needs to be many layers of ductile iron sheet metal. Sheet steel would also work, but iron is better.
Look at how the magneto coil is made to get a better understanding of what I am saying.

As for the gauge of wire and how many wraps on the coil, I would need to do a search on this site for that info. It has been discussed in the past and folks have made their own before.
 
I don't see why you couldn't get an old 6volt vw coil or something like it
and use that but then you would have to run a voltage regulator along with it.
but then I'm no electronics whizz

its out of stock and I dont know if it would fit but it seems like a EXCELLENT alternative. And at 2.50$ screwing up is not a problem. I go to their warehouse all the time and ill harass them about getting this back in stock next time i go.

Then again I do have a dead mag that i could chop up and rewind..... (deep thoughts)
 
Hey moto here are the lights I use and remember without a battery
no motor running, no lights!

1 each front and rear

and I used this for the battery lights

allows me to adjust the voltage I'm using

I use a 12 volt 10.5 AH battery $45 on ebay and I get about 20 hours on a charge not that I let it drop that much ever, I use a 12 volt car battery maintainer
Oh and bright! lights up whole lane 40 foot out
