Hi from Mesa az. I'm looking for advice on which engine/transmission set-up is best for my mtn. bike.I don't want any china junk, just something reliable and fast. The cost is not important.
The bike is a Trek 4500.
Thanks Darrell.cvlt1

welcome to the forum, oh and I wouldnt call what the vast majority of members here own "junk" and expect much help

im sorry all i have is junk so i cant help you .. but when i pass your car .. just remember its only junk :P

see what you started with one little word? if someone called my bike "junk," man, it's on.

by the way, where exactly is your bike and all it's parts made?

if you want a "non chinese junk engine," then you need to build a time machine first.

with all that said, and back to your questions, the engine choices are very limited if you don't want to go the 2 or 4 stroke china route.

as Joe said, try a morini.

I'm okay with my engine being classified as junk. It means Iust be especially cunning to make it run so well.

laff

Ya get a point fer that lol (^)

In many ways - the stock, untouched china kits are junk, yet given the expense and effort of getting one of those pocket bike engines to work on a bike - you could get a Morini or even blueprint a HT kit to be the best bike engine ever and still have time & cash to spare...

Still - if ya manage to cram a 12hp water-cooled motor ona bicycle, we'll no doubt all stand back in awe (well back, and perhaps an "awww") ;)

They make smaller race engines 6-8hp that are not water cooled. completely ported, smaller and about the same price as the Morini.

Yarp - and there's been some attempts to work them into a bicycle;

Potential problems include size but more problematic - shape, drive, and interestingly enough, many pocket bike engines in a similar price range are of no better quality than the China kits you don't like... as they're also made in China lol

I'm not sayin' it can't or even shouldn't be done - I'm jus' wonderin' about the distinct lack of pocket bike repowered bicycles when the engines are so common...

For the dough - I'd still get a Morini, unless it's the MacGyverism yer after... then anything goes FTW ;)
