So it can be done, but why bother, cheap coaster brakes will wear out fast. Good ones have pads. Might as well look for a drum brake unit in a pile of crappy junk bikes.
Now I have to go find a boneyard......

Hello,
My local dude has a old vintage Schwinn Stingray hub with the "crate" drum hub in it.
I think it's called a Atom.

Will this adapt into a new style Schwinn cruiser? The front fork is really fat, and the end is a welded on l tab. So it's not a smooth transition. There is a huge area. But I guess the lever rides inside the fork, so getting the arm attached has me wondering.
It is huge compared to a old stingray fork. Which has a nice distal taper.

Also I measured the front forks, new cruiser is 100mm.
The old Stingray, at the ends of securing nuts. 93mm. But this fork is from
a regular Fastback. I don't know if its bigger spread on a Pea picker, or whatever
those ones with the smaller wheels are.

Guess I have to go back and measure the mounting points.

I bit the bullet and purchased some Sturmey Archer XL-SD's. Got them at the lowest price I could find. Let google shopping do its magic for Sturmy Archer Brake Hub. Price was cheaper from company than postings on Ebay. Probably due to 10% Ebay hits ya for.

So 90MM!!! I have to figure out my spoke size.

This is all they give you

Pitch Circle Diameter 109 mm
Flange Width: 58mm
Center to Flange: R 32mm
L 26mm

Takes 13g - 14g spokes

Its going onto a 36 spoke 26" cruiser rim.

So any help figuring out the spoke length is appreciated, as I cannot get any answer
out of the calculators. I will see if I can find any answers anywhere.

Oh and the old ATOM hub. Good luck finding brake shoes for it. I found some SRAM hubs for like 29 dollars!! But they were only made for like 7 years. So good luck finding parts. Sturmey 100 years being made. No brainer.

where did you find them? Those are wheelchair hubs and not available in the us they are side mount quick release hubs used also for tadpoles, just double check they come in left and right mount maybe XLFD ?. If you need help with spoke length you need to figure out the ERD effective rim diameter of your rim to get spoke size you need. Ok I need help with the Spoke Calculator. Hub is a Sturmey Archer XL-FD 90 mm!!

Laid down bare hub measured inside diameter =542mm

Measured rim thickness = 2mm x2 LOL UPDATED CORRECT MEASURMENTS

So total rim inner width 546mm
--------------------------------------------------------------
I went to the Bike School rim calculator. They said:

Outer rim diameter 571mm

Edge down to nipple lower screw detent 13mm New correct measurement

Then they said multiply it by 2 and subtract from
571 545mm

OK so I got 546 with one way, 545 with the other.

So err with a shorter ERD or larger??

Pitch Circle Diameter or 109mm
Length Between Hub holes

Flange Width 58mm do i even need this?

Center to Flange Right 32mm
Center to Flange Left 26mm

Spoke hole Diameter 4mm

RIM # of holes 36

Crossin pattern 3

So last question is if the Right and Left Center to Flange measurements are
different, I need to calculate each side, and then get two different length
spokes. And then figure out Right and Left side and use the spokes accordingly?

If anyone can run these measurements through the calculator, or at least tell me
what ERD measurements to use , please feel free!!! Damn mathematics!! There is
only one right answer!!!

Did you get the book I sent? There is only one ERD for a rim , and the manufacturers specs should be spot on.

That guy uses two 200 mm threaded cut spokes, then measures the distance between them and adds 400. I saw on internet the guy just measures the inner diameter 4x times to get average. Then the rim thickness, and adds 2x the thickness. There you go, same thing as the guy in the pdf booklet said.

What I don't understand is on the bike college website, they say measure the total diameter of rim, then top edge of rim to the bottom slot of the nipple. "multiply the result by 2 and then subtract from outside rim diameter. That gave me different
ERD, far smaller than what size the hub really is. They're directions sound like they are wrong, unless they have some different algorythm in the computation thingy that uses that measurement. Its all bloody confusing.

So which is the right ERD? Is what im asking. I already know there is only one correct
ERD.

OMG! Dysylexia rears its ugly head!! I had the right hub diameter. It was on a piece of paper the fan blew on the ground behind my desk. I had just measured it. I wrote down
156, or whatever. LOL it was 546mm!!! Whaoops!!! 74mm just didn't seem right!!

Math always was my worse subject, for just the same reason today, I always seem to
have class in the morning, on a empty stomach, just like today I ate nothing untill 8pm!! Starving dyslexia. Well I think I got it now lol!!

Ok so after re measuring the hub BOTH ways, I came up with a ERD of 546mm for a Schwinn Clairmont Cruiser Hub. I got the following for spoke lengths

3 cross- 249.6 left
250.3 right

So should I buy 248mm or 250mm???
2 mm short would leave them right at the rim edge on the left side. Do they need to come up 1mm or does the Nipple act as enough support?

Need a reply so I can start looking for them!!! Thanks!!

What length spoke should I settle on?? Anyone?

Longer is better as you can easily trim off excess with a threaded rod cutter on a good pair of wire strippers/cutters. Too short and you compromise nipple strength. (lol)

I ordered 250mm spokes. Wonder if that will be good?
Find out when I lace them up and try to tension them.
At that point I am going to take them to a shop and let them
finish it. I am going to watch truing vids, but i have never gotten
a wheel true!!

YOSH!!! I got my spokes yesterday afternoon. And by nightime i had my wheel all done! Got lucky and tightened it up easily.
Went one turn, destressed
One turn, de stressed spokes.

Then I did lateral trueness and roundness adusting, it was still lil off.
I put up two chairs and laid a yardstick on the top of them for lateral.
Then put chairs on both sides of bike to check out of roundness.

I started doing another half turn, I got 5 spokes and let the wheel go
and lost my spoke position!! I was fuming!! But then I spun the wheel
and it was perfect!!!

So I just half turned them all, and they came up to full tension!!
Spokes were perfect Length.

Now I just have to hunt down some conduit clamps in 1 1/4 inch to pin
the brake arm. And I'm done!!!

Be sure to recheck tension after a few rides. New wheels sometimes loosen until the spokes take a set...

Yeah as I hit top end I heard a few of the rim goin ping!!! I let up quick and slowed down.
Some spokes do indeed seem looser no, so hmm good thing I ran it dry!!
