dumb question about chain tension

just double-checking my thoughts here.....

My rear wheel kicked sideways yesterday & rubbed hard on the left inside frame. The pedal-side had slipped forward, but the drive-side stayed in place. And I know I tightened both sides as part of my pre-flight check just minutes before.

I can't tell you exactly what I was doing when it happened. I may have been pedaling. But chances are, that could only happen from too much sudden tension on the pedal side, right? I'm beginning to suspect that it's the pedal-side master link snagging on the rear sprocket.

Is there paint on your drop outs? I know on all my bmx bikes I had to sand off the paint on the axle nut section of drop out. If I didn't my rim would slip no matter how much I tightened it.
