custom jackshaft tensioner

I am building a motorised bike as a project in college, I have a botom bracket being used as a jackshaft and need a way to tension it, i have a idea of something similar to motorbike wheel tensioner type setup for the shaft could it work

its running a chain, I got it built roughly would work if used with the right engine just didn't suit mine, will post picture later.
