Chain Tension?

I recognize the need for some chain slack, as over tightening can damage chain and engine bearings. However, ive heard that an overly loose chain can jam up under clutch cover, locking the rear wheel.

Im trying to determine at what amount of chain slack that jamming becomes a concern.
Anyone experiment with this (or learn by accident)?

whatever amount of slack that prevents the chain from having a 'tight spot' anywhere along its run

if the chain needs a LOT of slack at some point to keep from having a tight spot, then a new chain is needed

You don't want any slack in the chain, but you also cant have it tight like a guitar string... It will naturally loosen up a little bit after riding for a few miles.

If the chain is going 'loose-tight-loose-tight' as you spin the rear wheel?, then your rear sprocket isn't centered correctly.
