The top hat allows for proper alignment when mounting the sprocket to the disc brake rotor mount. I used the stock 44T sprocket to accomplish this - Andy at KingsSalesandService is the only guy who fabs them and charges more money than I would like to pay for it, so I ended up using some basic parts and got it done for around 10 bucks instead of 50 or so.
