Did you see the WARNING when you got your mags
View attachment 114736

I will take the blame for this one... 'Doug' brought his bike to my shop to finish building it, & I installed the caliper brake because the rear disc system he had wasn't going to work with his frame (& wheel spacing).

He told me that there was a warning about using caliper brakes... But I told him to just keep an eye on the side walls of the rim for any problems.... I'm guessing this warning is because one customer wore the sides of the rim down to nothing? (kinda like warning labels on shampoo bottles)?

.

Or, like the warning label on 2 strokes (don’t run more than 20 minutes) or coaster brakes (they explode!)

No worries. This is a temporary fix until I find a creative solution to the problem (220 or 250 mm rotor, modify/bend frame, custom built rear wheel, or new frame). Whatever answer I come up with it will be innovative and whack.

Speaking of pictures…are there any pictures of said mag rim failures?
I bet if ya search bicycle mag rim failures you'll find pics

I've seen rim brakes eat thru aluminum rims
It's your bike not mine
I'm not saying not to use rim brakes on your mag wheels I was just wondering if you saw the warning

Yes, I saw the warning and didn’t find the pictures yet (1 search). This is a temporary situation. Probably looking at a different wheel set or rear wheel. I’m not overly attached to the mags (cheap/cool) or the frame (dumpster). I appreciate all feedback and concern and didn’t mean to cop an attitude. I value the experience and wisdom of others. This is a puzzle with a heavy weight, a lot of hills, and physical safety. I’m beginning to see why people put such an emphasis ($) on heavy duty wheel sets. I don’t have a problem spending a little money.
