Rear wheel seems to have double the amount of spokes............What brand of bike is it?......Curt
I was thinking the same thing. I assumed it was for the extra torque applied to it. I was not aware of tire locks. I have no idea of the brand. I came across this picture when looking for pictures of a bike for a future build. Sadly there is no way I could replicate an engine like that. I have to admire so many of those guys of that area that actually cast & built their own engines. Of course many engines were purchase from manufacturers of that time! I was lucky enough to purchase this non running engine on ebay. After many hours I did get running and built a bike around it.

Remember that, Kind of looks like a Gravely motor. What are you working on now.?......Curt
Gravely model D, pretty rare . Only 1/2 Hp but mucho-mucho torque!

I normally build 1 bike each winter but with the covid and the needs of neighbors, not sure I will be able to this year (Bummer).

A place to find vintage engines and usually at reasonable prices is Craigslist. Search for edger, I picked up a 2hp Briggs that was running for $20. An antique Clinton engine on a edger that was $15, but was not running, needed a carb cleaning. Not too many in the winter time, spring is better, they lest it sit all winter and let it get gummed up and frustration puts it up for sale. Search the big large towns in your area.

The rear wheels extra spokes are for the extra rim that the leather belt driver pulley. Enlarge the pic and in between the regular spokes is a short one for the "pulley" rim. Looks like the other spokes also go through that pulley for strength.

Took another look and there is short spokes to the belt rim. Never seen that before. LOL..........Curt

I check CL almost every day looking for any vintage/antique/old/stationary/hit and miss. I also try to check market place, daily. I have a 300 mi range limit and a $500 limit. Have picked a few 50's Briggs (but not what I really would like to find. Thank you for the input and KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN! PS: I did pick up this engine a few years back on E-bay and built this bike around it.

Thx for the tips! One CANNOT have enough small engines, sitting in the shed! I had a B/S 4.5hp 2-stroke given to me by a guy who "didn't trust 2-strokes". It runs nice- just haven't decided what to do with it yet.

Could you post a pic of your B/S 2 stroke, I'd love to see it. Is it alum or cast iron?

From what I know, it's a vertical-shaft mower engine built for B/S by Mitsubishi. 140cc 4hp. model # 96722
I had some pix of it on another forum, but they're gone. Here are some stock images...

Than You very much for posting that info. I often come across Tecumseh 2cycle 5Hp engines(which are great), but never knew B/S sold a 2cycle (although I now know they didn't MFG. it).

It would make a pretty neat powerplant for a project... when I fired it up, it was without benefit of the the blade attached (usually on the vertical motors, they rely on the blade as part of their "flywheel effect"), and it ran rock-steady and smooth. It would take quite a bit of cobbling to fit it to something, but I think it would be worth it.
