There are no noticeable problems with my engine, seems to run fine, the head bolts are snug. But, I noticed some black gunk on the top of the muffler pipe right next to the head and the same on the front of the head and engine. Can someone tell me what is causing this? Is it a big, or minor, problem?

Gasket material with high-temp (orange) RTV on both sides works for me.

I got a new motor and it came with an exhaust gasket with a thin piece of metal on the front and back of the gasket. Never seen those. Should I keep em and just use the RTV still?

Thanks, guys. I suspected a blown exhaust gasket and you confirmed it. I'll remove the exhaust pipe to make sure and get some gasket material. Thanks for the recommendations on gasket replacement.

That's the type that SHOULD come with these engine kits. They aren't very good for re-use though.
