Maniac Mechanic hub adapter or just a different wheel?

I've been looking at ways to avoid the rag joint on my back wheel and have come across several different options. The most popular seem to be a custom sprocket adapter that clams around the hub or completely replacing the wheel with a hub/sprocket combo. Or a shift kit, but that's much further down the road.

I'm not so keen on the idea of the hub/sprocket combo because of the integrated brakes that come with them.

That leaves me with the sprocket adapter from MM. I have no idea how to buy one of the adapters. Pirate sells four different types but I have no idea which one to grab. My rear hub is a Shimano Deore LX Parallax hub. Prolly came with the bike way back in '96 when my brother bought it.

Any help or experience?

Measure it with a micrometer and see if any are the same size. From what I've heard Pirate is real good with customer service and could probably help you somehow.

After measuring, if none of the ones at Pirate are the same size, you're probably better off getting a custom one for your hub. Here's the link for that:

I saw that. I don't know if mine will work. My hub is like the second hub style here and I'm pretty sure the beveled part isn't less than .25". I guess I just need to dig out the calipers and measure it up.
