Hey Steve,
The short (dangerous) answer is no.
But in reality on anything like this you need at least a quality monitering system. & make good decisions when the gages tell you need to stop. A high qualty BMS will do all that for you by shutting down when the operating parameters are exceeded.
I ride "cowboy" style with simple battery alarms that go off if a cell trips a programed low voltage piont.
HobbyKing Online R/C Hobby Store : BM-6 Cell Voltage Monitor 2-6S Lipo (New Version))
I do all my charging & battery maintance on the bench. 99% of my riding is on a track in the back yard or in a parking lot on suday mornings & batteries rarely see 50% discharge levels.
What are you running for batteries now? If its time to replace or upgrade then defiantly look at Lipo.
KIm has a far more advanced Managment system on his cruser, I will let him elaborate on his specifics of his set up.
I would think 20Ah would be a starting point (10cells 4parrallel thats) 8-5cell 5000mah packs 2 packs in series & then the 4 groups parraleled for capacity.
chargers, & the like are many, & in every price range.
if your struggling with any e-bike issues, the greatest knowledge base is definatly ES. A good guy to read is "Dogman" a resident equipment tester & critic. He gives good advice with insight & experiance & he has just made the transition to Lipo over LiFe ping packs I think. (at least on his race bike)
here are a couple threads any E-biker thinking Lipo should read:

do pm dogman & ask specific questions. He has allways been helpfull to those in need. & frequents this forum also. good guy.
