Belt drive motors

I rode the smallest 25cc GEBE engine from Alabama to Denver and back in May 2006. 2,000 miles, 11 gallons of gas.

If I lived up there, I'd have somebody make a small modification to the intake, to compensate for the altitude.

I've heard of some simple solutions, but didn't pay attention because I'm way under 3,000 feet. But that is the ONLY specific modification I know of (as long as you can stay away from ethanol).

I have read posts of the larger #2 kit? for 76mm clutch stripping belts. Has anybody experienced this? The GP460 would fit right on the gebe? My eho35 has 1.6 HP so perhaps the GP460 is the right motor for me. Problem I am having is clutches wear out fast. This should be the same 76mm clutch I have. I would like thicker surface on the pads for longer life. Any suggestions?
 
I was looking at those Golden Eagle kits as well. What I want is a kit with a belt drive like that, only a frame-mounted engine (instead of over the rear wheel). Does anyone sell a kit like that?

Something like that is EXACTLY what I want to build. Are there any threads here that detail how some folks have done it? From what I am seeing it looks like I would need to buy a kit from one of the vendors and modify it myself to convert a frame-mount chain drive into a frame-mount belt drive. Those "board track racer" style bikes are the style I am interested in, like the original Harleys.

you can make a drive ring pulley the same diameter as the GEBE
taking the aluminum rim from a 20" bike wheel and notching it to
fit the spokes. I used a 7 inch Skil saw set to 3/8" depth. To fix
it in place run wire inside the rim behind the spokes. This works
fine and is far more durable than a plastic one.
The below pic illustrates, however you should note I have looped
rope thru the frame, making this configuration impossible. That's
something i failed to notice when I picted this mockup. Duh! I've
since got a working model, but no pic of it

That might be tough getting a good ratio with the next size rim for a sheave,
i.e. 16".
In the picture above I used the rim of a 20" whl. as a sheave for the mockup
shown. After the build, this setup produced good high end speed on the flat,
but was disappointing on a grade. I then went to the rim of a 24" and have had
good results low and even better high end. Since there is less stress on the
engine, it reaches higher rpm.
I still ride this setup regularly, and it's been very dependable. The down side to
creating your own belt drive is that it poses some challenging engineering. It
took a lot of tweaking before I got everything to work just the way I wanted.

Here's the way it looks with the 24" rim. What looks like a pannier is
actually a stealth cowling over the engine. I have seen video of a
Russian belt kit for 20" wheels.

You could use an 18" bicycle rim,just have to find it. Maybe try niagaracycles.com or similar online retailer.
 
That looks like it would work well, but pricy. I scrounge
most of my parts from a local bike boneyard, i.e., the
Recyclery. Still, if you can't find it anywhere else, Niagara
will probably have it and they're good about getting it out
quickly.
I don't know how heavy you are, Cuz, but with a 49cc
or less engine, I'd say you could get away with a 16" rim
using a 1" primary pulley because the 20" wheel already
give a lower ratio than a 26" wheel. Kid's bikes go dirt
cheap at garage sales, often for less than the price of
a new 16" tire. The 1" pulley can be found on line with
a bit of search. It might be worth it to try it.
V Belt Supply has belts in any length you'd want for
around $5 + postage. A 3L or 3V is what you'll need.
both will stretch a bit. the 3V gives more contact but,
being stiffer they require more breakin and don't perform
well until they are warmed up a bit.
You have to allow for some stretching adjustment to tighten
the belt. Their site has good instructions for measuring belt
size.
Get your 1" pulley first to be sure it will match your choice
of belt.

Okay, I went back and did the math. The problem is
the actual size of 16" rims varies, at least on the 2 I just checked.
It looks like with the 1" primary you'd get around 24 mph at
5500 rpm, (max torque)
That's too fast on 20" wheels and not much low end, but doable.
