When you are looking for a motor to use as a generator keep a few things in mind.

Rewiring the coils at the ends can give higher voltage or higher amperage.

Your generator only needs to have enough power to run the charger.
Not alot maybe even the 6v white wire can do it.
I don't know.

Your batteries unless used for long periods of time will allways be charged.
Your lights will allways work.
Maybe even a radio.

They use these setups in RC planes and RC Helicopters that cost thousands.

Theese have very small engines in them.

I'm pretty confident this will work well for us.
I just don't have time to do all the research right now.

If you want to build the circut i can help you.
It's alot simpler than you might think.

The charger can be tested with a universal DC power suplly.

These chargers don't require a large input voltage or wattage.

PERFECT.

I was looking at this last night and it interested me enough to go find the engines at an R/C hobby site. Their size would make them a great choice for power generation. I just dont know enough about electricity to know if they would supply enough current to keep a battery charged or not. I am however in favor/search of onboard power generation ideas. Mounting, weatherproofing and a way to drive the "generator" are the issues at hand. Driving it with the tire pops into mind firstzpt
 
Here is what you need to keep in mind.

The KV Rating is #1

That is the Rpm required by the rc motor to produce 1 volt of electricity.

The one in the PIC is KV245

That means for every 245 RPM the motor will produce 1 volt as a generator.

Thoose charging circuts require 12V @ 500ma.
Thats 12v at about 1/2 Amp.

That means we would need to spin it at 2940 RPM to get the voltage we need and i'm sure the amps would be much higher.

Have to look at the motor specs to see how many amps it runs at what speed.

So seeing how we would have more amps than we need you could run multiple charging curcits or lights + charging ect ect.

I think just running a charger to charge some good RC batteries would supply all the power we need.

Not really alot of power.

Ideally we would want the 17 volts to the charger.

That would be 4165 RPM.

So we need a way to gear the drive for the generator.
Pretty simple to do that really.
Won't have a whole lotta load there.

Or if you take the winding out of the motor and re arange the way the coils connect you can get higher volts at lower RPM but less amps which is ok.
 
I believe this is the way to re wire the motor.

Like i said this is what the rc guys do to keep there batteries charged in 5000 and 6000 planes and helicopters that run off of small internal combustion engines.

If you loose power you loose your plane.

I could probably build the chargeing Circuts for you guys pretty cheap.
But i need to get setup to etch Circut Boards.

Also the whole charging unit is only like 2 inches square.

I know there are some places that are wayy expensive.

MonsterPower 15 (950kv) OutRunner Brushless Motor

Motor $19.70 bvut its KV is alot higher which means u got to spin it even faster.

Exceed RC! Monster Power Brushless Series ( Motors for Large Scale Project - Size 10-46 )

The lower the KV the better.

Even 50 bucks isn't bad for a super high watt charging sys.

Ive seen rechargable bicycle lights for over 200 bucks.

Google is all i can say.

It takes time but if u look hard enough u can find deals.
 
i've contemplated rewinding an old magneto and mounting it next to the flywheel. you can just wnd some coils and glue them together and put that next to the flywheel and not use laminates it won't produce as much power but you can make it fit better

It would be interesting to see how long the thing would hold up.

The rc motors ahh 50 bucks aint too bad.
Might even be possible to use as an electric start if it was geared in Drivetrain.
