I have used the Nova ignition module for years on various types of equipment.
After reading an article on it, seems it should work with the magneto of the CG engine. The stock CG CDI is triggered by the position of the passing magnets. That's why they wont run with the rotor flipped so the key is in the wrong position. The Nova fires when the magnet passes, just as does the stock CDI.
Seems this module($10-15 depending where you buy it) used with a $7 scooter coil as used on the GY6 engines would provide a much more reliable CDI circuit. It still would rely on the stock mag however. I have never had a Nova fail, doesn't mean they wont but its not common.
Thoughts?
This is the module for those not familiar. http://www.ebay.com/itm/250831136597?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
