Thanks again to everyone for all of your thoughts and suggestions.
I went for a 15 mile ride today and then for 2 miles of pedaling afterward the pedaling was definitely easier but still stiff, I sure wouldn't want to pedal for 10 miles.
I believe that the drag is due to the design of the clutch and will confirm once I get a puller.
On a side note, Boulder bikers definitely don't care for getting passed by a motored bike on the uphill
