I've got an easy and cheap rear rack mod to share.
It starts with one of those $25 rear racks. I added a cargo platform made out of 1/2 x /16 steel.

That, however, was not really good enough. The 'footprint' was too small. The duffel tended to sag and it wasn't really very easy to get it loaded onboard. So I added a wider frame on top.

Now I come outside, slap the load on, loop the lashing straps over top, tighten down and go. The load is rock solid. And it can be pretty big with no problems.
