how to repaint your bicycle

Do you ever want to repaint your bicycle? heres some tips i learn online:

What you need:

• Spray paint (your color choice)
• Masking tape
• primer
• plastic bags
• a open area
• time

1) NEVER NEVR NEVER REPAINT A VINTAGE BIKE, IT HURTS ITS VALUE., but using the old huffy is ok... just dont repaint a collector's or rare bicycle.

ok now....

1) Strip the frame. I prefure to put the bolts in labled bags.. you may just be able to rember.
2) cover all holes/ bolts that wouldn't come out
3) stuff newspaper in the seat post and headtube. If you dont want to than cover up the openings.
4) find a open are with not much around it. remember, paint can get on stuff besides your bike
5) When spraying, make shure the can is about 6'' away, or you will drip (baad)
6) Prime. Make shure that you get the whole bike.
7) leave it to dry overnight
8) paint your base coat-remember 6'' away
9) let it dry overnight/ a few hours.
10) paint your last coat (note: additional coats might be needed)
11) paint the details.
12) let it dry.

This is fine if you have no access to an air compressor! however no matter how good you are it will still look like a rattle can job! If you have access to an air compressor i would definitely do it this way...

HVLP gun $10 (local Hardware store)
1 qt 2k primer and hardener (this is sandable and will look better if it is sanded)
1qt reducer
1 pt paint (color of any automobile manufactured)
1pt clear coat
600 grit wet/dry sandpaper
220 grit wet/dry sandpaper
masking tape
If you use the crossfire line of Martin Senour available at any napa store your total cost to paint is about 65 for the paint 10 for the gun and 2.50 for sandpaper 2.50 for tape and will produce a professional finish as well last longer than any rattle can job

to do this clean the bike paint surface and sand with 220 wash the bike down with a weak soapy water mix. make sure it is 100% dry and wipe down with reducer to remove any dust. mix and spray 2k filler primer allow to dry, sand with 600 till smooth. wash, dry and wipe down with reducer again. mix and spray paint allow to dry wipe down with cloth that will not leave any residue or dust and spray clear over top. paint with pearl products can be added to the clear coat to have a pearl or kandy color paint for an additional $12. Also you will have enough materials left over to do many other bikes/ projects as well to change color of paint a new pint is only like $14!
