how to I properly adjust my chain?

i've heard 1/2 inch of slack.
but is that with the bike:
clutch in or out?
with the bike pushed forward or back?
because those all seam to make a difference

Engage the clutch, roll the bike forward easily until the bottom chain run is tight then measure the slack on the top of the chain about mid way between the two sprockets.
1/2 to 3/4" slack (up and down movement) is what you're looking for.
