Gas Tank Vapor Lock on China Girl motorized bicycle Solved

My newly built China Girl (66cc 2-stroke motor) was cutting out after 5 to 10 minutes of running. Loosening the gas cap solved the problem. So that meant there was a vapor lock/vacuum caused by a very good seal on the gas cap. That's bad and good.

Rather than drill a hole in the center of the cap, I used this method (photo found on the net). After two days of hard mountain climbing, no more vapor lock and there is no gas leakage.

Yay!

Good for you, Russ.
You did exactly what we recommend in the case of a non-venting cap. Occasionally one of those sneaks through and they cause the builder a lot of problems unless they figure out the problem like you did.

Have fun, ride safe.

Some time after this thread first appeared I discovered what the real problem was and posted it here > http://motorbicycling.com/showthread.php?t=30967 check post number 8 to see why some caps vent and some don't .

If you need to drill you won't need any larger than a 1/16" bit. The larger the hole the more chance of fuel splashing out.
