Electric bicycle batteries

building santa cruz bullit e-bike bought lipo-4 72v 20ah phoenix 2 kit says it needs 30ah continuous want lighest best battery any suggestions will 20 work?

20 will work the same as a 30. your amp difference will effect the range only. I run a 48v 15ah battery and get around 27 to 28 miles a charge on an island with no flat land and I seldom pedal. I think 20ah should do fine.

yes mkatt. as i said above i live on an island and it is just a mountain range, distance someone would get in a flat area i think would be a lot more. here is a google earth shot and you can see what i mean. perfect weather for a motorized bicycle though, i ride almost every day

Oh I must have missed the "lipo" in your original post. I'm tempted to drop the coin on electric DIY, but the cheapness of a 2 stroke always brings me around. If I could do a DIY electric for a few hundred bucks and get 20miles out of it i'd be set.

You will see a diff between 20 and 30 and 40ah and it's not even.
lets say 20 ah will get you 20mi (that's very optomistic, esp in hills)
30Ah may get you 35mi and 40Ah more like 50mi.
The reason for this is that the percentage of the "C rate" that you suck has an effect on
overall performance.
I had a so called 20ah LiFEp04 and it got me like 15mi, boo. Got a 40 ah (12p8s 18650 cells) and a 45A balance system and I get an HONEST 45mi+ in Pittsburgh (very hilly)
On a bike that has a 450w chain drive, steel frame, 2.0 tires etc.. (currie ezip trailz)
This bike weighs around 75lbs and I weigh about 185 plus cargo like laptop etc..
I pull 35Amps on hills, this will CRUSH smaller batteries..
