Do I really need a 36 spoke wheel?

If you are using the kit supplied sprocket adaptor it is easier if you have a 36 spoke wheel since you will be using a nine hole pattern.
But no, you don't have to use a 36 spoke wheel if you are going to use an alternative adaptor such as the ones I make or the ones Jim (Manic Mechanic) supplies.

I have a couple of 5 hole sprockets that fit other wheels and don't really work too well with the standard spoke pattern. Maybe that would help you out.
