Have you thought about a disk lock? They have them w/or without alarms. They are more than $5 but at $25 for a non alarmed one, it is really not that bad. They are really qick to pop on. The problem is that nowadays a thief would just ride away with the alarm going off. With the disk lock the bike will not roll.

If im just running in the store i just pop the disk alarm on. Any longer and i got the cables.

i have a really nice lock however as i said for running in store when i don't see need to lock it it will be nice. when i do use my lock i will also turn it on for additional security
 
Perhaps I'm just missing it but isn't it just an on/off switch and the A-B-C selector is the sound level? What would keep someone from just pushing the off button?
 
you need to push in a 4 letter combination to arm and disarm. the abc is also used for sound level. one of the other listings had a better discription. here it is

And the short answer is NO FREAKING WAY. No one pays attention to them anyway.
I don't care if I'm just runnin into 7-11 for a pack of smokes and theres no line. If I can't see my bike from where I'm standing, I lock it up. If I'm gonna be a few minutes sometimes I'll use two locks and chains. Some youngsters (Not all) are getting pretty bold about stealing stuff. If they can just throw it in the back of a pickup truck, they will, alarm or not. By the time you hear the alarm and get back outside, it's gone. I think once they get it around the corner they'll just give it a couple shots with hammer and disable it. So just a word of advice from someone that been around for too many years. Lock it up as tight as you can. Then lock it again.(To a tall pole, a big tree or a bike rack.) after you do that then perhaps an alarm will prevent someone from cutting the locks.

i lock it and set the alarm. that alarm going off may just scare them away and keep them from trying to cut the lock. alarm itself i agree is worthless however in combination with the lock i like it
 
I have one of those alarms installed covertly on my bike, paid $5 shipped and installed it last week.

It works extremely well, especially at my local bar. I got sick of people touching my bike while it was parked outside. Last Friday, some yahoo grabbed ahold of my handlebars, the alarm started screaming, and I was out the door in a flash with my beatdown gameface on. No one touches my bike anymore :D

Perhaps you already know, you can get a DUI on a regular pedal bike too. The fines and everything are the same as a car.

Not that I asked, but I'm well aware of that. You can even get one on a skateboard. This aint my first rodeo on a bicycle.

By the way, did you know you can crash on a bike? Did you know you can get a flat tire on a bike? lol :-{
