i screwed it in and backed it out 2 turns does that sound right?

Stash,
The screw on the carb is a idle speed adjustment, if you have the stock carb. This needs to be adjusted when the motor is warmed up, out(CCW) lowers the idle, in(CW) raises it. If it doesn't lower, ensure your cable is not holding the carb barrel up, you should have a bit of "slack" in the throttle cable.
