Several of my recent builds have needed grinding under the sprocket cover even with stock chain.
Here's a quick how-to for new builders with chain rub issues.
This is the finished cover ground for clearance.
Those of you using HD chains need the same thing with additional grinding on the clutch arm boss inside the cover. (the boss is where the clutch arm inserts into the cover)
The easiest way to find out if you need this is to remove the sprocket cover and look for marks caused by the chain. They will appear right above the hole where the bucking bar goes into the cover. If you see marks, grind where the marks appear until you have free clearance.
