I got two new kits from Dax today. I already took one apart. It looks OK, It is interesting to see the evolution of these engines. This one had a short rod crank, the ports are smaller than I have seen. I am not using the cylinder, the fins are very thin, I guess it is OK. I already have barrel that is ported, so I will use that. the head has a large combustion chamber so the ratio will be low. The gears are meshing better than I have seen ever. They still have the square teeth on the output sprocket. I would sure like to see the timing cover get some more mettle! This one has a dent in it so I wont be able to polish. I like the newer clutch handle, the chrome on the gas tank is a new one, I guess I can incorporate it in a paint schema. Keep you posted when I get it running. Have fun, Dave

Ok a little secret for all of you guys... At the City Dump site here in Hazard Ky i have gotten like 10 bikes in no time... there is a little trick though. i worked at a church next to it and took the trash over there directly to the platform that all the trash goes to before a bulldozer pushes it into the truck... i talked to the bulldozer driver and he started putting all of the bikes to the side for me and i would take them if i wanted to and if i didnt take them in a few days he would push them over. id say is a nice chap would go and ask someone who worked in your local place, and maybe work out a deal... you could do the same... i got a green occ chopper stingray...a 198? huffy bike with a leather spring seat with the internal 3 speed hub that still works. a bunch of mountain bikes and even some kid bikes.... ohh yeah and all for free but i would have paid him a little for his trouble if he wanted it.

Out here in the country(texas)there is a couple of second hand stores that take donations(people helping people and The boys and girls club)....They both have tons of biclyes lined up for 5 to 10 buck and if they dont sell them within a couple weeks they put them in a free pile with furniture and what not....If I was to start collecting all the bikes they give away my yard would look like a bicyle graveyard....I bought 2 beachcruisers from them for 5dollors each(im not much into the mountain bike look for my MB setups)they have tons of name brand mountain bike and street bikes though....

I am inclined to look at the thrift store for some bikes but I have to keep this addiction to at least some kind of reality. I just have to build something and it has to have a motor on it. Not one of my little Honda's are done, I can ride most of them but I was going to restore some of them at least, now they just sit. Have fun, Dave

Well I got another one finished today. Ill tell you this, these kits are not the easiest things to get going. First off the sprockets are the worst. I have to carve on them for at least an hour. The one on the engine was so bad the the chain would not come close to running through. The one in the rear just kept derailing till I hit every tooth on the sides so that they would role into the chain. I am getting tired of the head studs being too long. The last one had the stack of washers and I thought this one would be better, (not). As soon as the engine started it blew the head gasket, the aluminum is so soft that it just pushed it out from under the head, I added another washer to the stack and a new gasket and it runs fine. The last bike I found had 32 spokes so the sprocket would not go on that wheel, and I liked that one. I found a wheel on a Recumbant bike I was building so that is the one on it now. I ran the bike around for a while, it runs good and quiet, but the porting is doing no good with the stock muffler, I will do my mods to that too. I up'd the size of the hole in the carb to a .063 and it seems to work good. It was idling straight away. I like the 41 tooth sprocket that came with the kit, the chrome tank, I think I like too. The clutch handle is the best, I never thought I would like anything better than the Russian one. The throttle and kill switch is better than the last batch of engines I got. As soon as I work out the last of the bugs I am going to paint the thing, I know I said that the last time I built a bike and it is still the same old color. Have fun, Dave

PS: I want to add another bar in the frame just above the engine, I think It would make it stronger. You can see the pic of the piston and notice the hole is lower than most, it has a short rod crank.

Hi Doc - I had to look at the pic to see what it was that you saw. That is a Hit and Miss engine I built a few years ago. It is made with a Honda 125 crank and piston and liner, home made head with 1/2" pipe 90s for intake and exhaust B&S valves and keepers. It uses auto intake and a one lobe cam made from an old bolt, I found a gear in the trans that had double the teeth driven off the old drive to the clutch, and it pulls the lifter that way it need not be so well made. You can see I used two I beams for runners. I had it running a few years ago for a few licks. I never got a good ignition hooked up. Have fun, Dave

PS: I always look around the room in pictures, I love Itinerary photos they stop time.

OK Doc - I am an old Honda mechanic. I worked for the dealers through the 60's so I have an affinity for these machines. I also maintain the yahoo Group Yahoo! Groups I have too many in the garage. I got started building the Happy Time bikes and can't stop. Have fun, Dave

This last engine I got from Dax I am liking. I don't know if it will stay this way but this thing runs so nice is is a pleasure to ride. I wish I could figure out a way to post a Youtube vid. I tried but to no avail it just will not post. I would love for everyone to hear the way this thing runs, (as smooth as glass). I think I will try running the other one and not carve on the ports and see how that goes. I will add the extra washers under the head bolts before I try anything. I am looking for a section of 1" pipe to add to the frame I think it needs one just over the top of the engine. I want to add the truss bars to the front fork also I think it makes it look early. Have fun, Dave

Egor, were did you get the cylinder from?It looks 100% better quality than the thin fins on the dax motor....Also,If I pull the cylinder off my new engines is it hard to get the rings pushed back up into the new cylinder?Do I need a special to do it?I have 5 junk engines around that have lost compression and thinking about ordering a gasket set, cylinder, piston, rings, and needle bearing and actually try and rebuild one of them....If my engines came with the copper bushing connecting to the piston will the needle bearing fit?

John, I Think It Is "baileys.com" That I Got My $5. Kit For Installing Rings In Chain Saw Type Engines. It Has A Plastic Slotted Plate That Slides Under The Pistom To Hold It In Place. There Is Also About 3 Or So Different Size Locking Ring Compressors. Millions And Millions Of Car Motors Have Wrist Pin Bushing. Your Rod Would Have To Be Machined Properly And May Not Be Hard Enough, For The Roller Bearing. I Don`t Know If Anyone Has Done The Conversion. Ron .cvlt1

John the rings are easy to install into the barrel, just make sure that you line the ends up with the small pins in the piston ( that keeps the rings from rotating into the ports) I have never tried to install the rollers in a bushing engine, there is some threads out there that will explain if you can. On the bushing engine just keep the RPM's down. That barrel came from Kings out in Florida I got a bunch of stuff in a box for a deal. I like the fins too. I started carving on the Dax cylinder today I think this one will turn out good. I am going to force myself to leave one alone and just run it and see what it is like. I only have one engine that went south, it threw all the big end rollers into the ports, that was the end. Well I actually made a bushing for that engine and got it going again, but the bushing did not last long. Fixed the ports and ran the piston with one ring, worked fine till the bushing got too loose. Have fun, Dave

Do you think this barrel has missed a machining operation? To me it looks like they forgot to mill the top, see the rounded over edge! I put it on the block and put the piston to the top and it fall's short. You can see I have been carving on the ports. I widened the transfer and enlarged the exhaust and intake. Well, I don't know what to think about the barrel I will try and put it on the mill and mill the top off. Have fun, Dave

PS: The cylinder I used on the other engine was clean shave'n and the piston was at top. See the piston in the other pic how low the pin location is, (short rod). Also look and the size of the cut outs for the transfer ports, I removed a lot of metal from that barrel (one on top)
