I began building kit bikes, then moved to diy gasoline bikes mostly weedeater and chainsaw motor. now I build ebikes. I think there is more innovation required for the ebike. There is a lot less information about then than gasoline bikes, so there is a lot more experimentation. I like that about them. I don't mean changing things around gasoline builders do that and I appreciate their efforts. But ebikes it's more basic experiments. There just aren't that many of them around. The store bought ones are expensive and I still don't know which manufacturers will be around two years later. It's the wild west of bike building.
