Before you install your piston, take and furrow out the groove that the retainer clip sets in. It will help it seat and lessens the chance of failure.
I use the c style clips, the g are to sketchy for my taste and an orange handled pick that I got from harbor freight in a pack of hooks and picks. Just don't get carried away.
I put together about 15 different engines and I've never had the c-clips fail on me. This works with c or g clips.
It's one of those things you don't think about until it's too late.
