Is the 48/50cc motor dead?

A few years ago many here swore by them-

now they, and the parts especially seem harder to find.

they are still listed on alibaba in bulk, but the dwindling suppliers here and on ebay seem to paint a different picture

I dont think so - my buddy just bought one the other day. I think that a lot of sellers assume that buyers will automatically buy a bigger engine because they assume more power out of it - and thus stock many more 80cc (or 66cc technically) motors thank 50cc ones. I hope they dont go away! I dont think they will. Personally I find them great for around town: smooth as silk and just as fast as an 80 at top speed, but less torque and hill ability.
