Gross looking oil

The engine manual says to change the oil every ten hours of operation... which I did.

I'm surprised the oil is so dark though. This is the first oil change since I have build the contraption.
Is... it supposed to look like that?

Your first oil change should be after 1hr then every 10hrs. Just change it.

The first oil change on any motor will need to be done quickly, as the motor is taking initial wear off. After the first or second should be more normal looking

Oil always looks terrible when you change it, that's why you change it... ;-[)

Depending on how dirty your engine is inside, oil can look dark in a relatively short time. Otherwise, in a clean engine, it will look dirty at around the oil change interval, and really look nasty when you go too long, it will be black as the ace of spades...
