Extended exhaust question

This is probably going to sound stupid, but around the site I've seen people who have the extended-type exhaust pipes, and frequently they're wrapped in something that looks like a grayish-tan fabric. What is this and what does it do?
 
it is heat-wrap :)
it is used to keep from getting branded by a hot pipe
I really like the looks as well ;)
