Disc brake

I know nothing of disc brakes on a bicycle as to how effective they are. I have an opportunity to put a mechanical disc brake front on my bike. How effective are they vs hydraulic? The guy who I might end up trading with knows his stuff but the trade is a mechanical disc brake. Any input is appreciated. Mechanical vs linear too and my front brake is tight but v-brakes do have disadvatages.

I used just one rear hydraulic on my caddy bike with a morini 5.9 horse. It stops so much faster than the mechanical hands down. Just my two cents worth. Day and night difference.

I have the avid bb7 discs on front an rear of my bike , if I grab them too hard that bike stops on a dime an gives you nine cents change . ya cant go wrong with them .
