Chain on frame

Hypothetical question: if your drive chain is rubbing against the bike frame, will it grind out the frame, or will it wear on the chain?
 
The frame will wear faster, especially if it's aluminum. If the chain is hitting the frame you need to do whatever it takes to keep that from happening.

Correct, but there would still be wear on the chain. There is also the potential for knocking the clip off the master link, if used, and the clip is allowed to contact the frame.

Anywhere the chain hits the frame would be a structural member. You certainly don't want to compromise those.
