Hi all, it's time to start planning the 2011 Cape Helopen (Lewes, DE) Rally. This will be the fourth annual rally at the park. As always, all categories of motorized bikes are welcome, from gas to electrics to mopeds. Heck, if it has two (or three) wheels, bring it!
We will soon post a date for this event. We're looking to hold it in either September or early October, but a few weekends are not good (at least for this organizer). The weekend of September 10/11 is out, and September 17/18 might not be good either because of it coinciding with Delmarva Bike Week. The last rally coincided with that and traffic was horrendous on Sunday. We want to avoid October 1/2 for two reasons: first it's the NASCAR event at Dover and traffic gets beyond horrendous, plus room rates skyrocket. Secondly, it is the weekend of the Trexlertown (PA) Bicycle Swap Meet, and I will be there.
The weekend of September 24/25 might be in the running but I'm awaiting confirmation of another event date that may pose a conflict for me.
If that weekend doesn't work I'm going to suggest October 8/9.
We will have T-shirts made for the event as last year, plus we are looking to give out awards again. I have found a better source for trophies, so expect much larger trophies than before.
Stay tuned!

Well you know Jay & Bonnie will be there!! This is a great rally at a great location!! Last year we rode to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Great restaurants like that Irish Pub!! The Saturday night party at the motel is always a blast!! These days my only problem is which bikes to bring

Re: 2011 Cape Henlopen (Lewes, Delaware) Rally Sept 17/18

Okay folks, mark your calendars! Against my better judgement I'm scheduling the Cape Henlopen Rally for the weekend of September 17/18. That is because of other events that conflict on the weekends of Sept 24/25 and October 8/9. So we'll be up against Delmarva bike week. Traffic will likely be bad on Sunday, but not as bad as when NASCAR is at Dover on October 1/2.

RALLY SHIRTS!

Here is the design for this year's rally t-shirt. This year's shirt will be grey, and the printing will be on both sides. Once I establish pricing from the printer, I'll start taking orders. Right now the ballpark figure is around $25 for sizes S through XL, and XXL is $5 more. The price is a bit higher than last year's shirts because they are two-sided.
The front has an image of a vintage Whizzer with "Participant *" as the text above, and "4th Annual Cape Henlopen Motorized Bike Rally" as the text below. The back has the slow moving vehicle triangle as the image (okay, I'm being a little tongue-in-cheek there) with "* Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult" as the text.

Just booked my room for the rally!! Here's the link to where we all stay:

Red Mill Inn - Lewes, Delaware - Yahoo! Travel
We have been staying at the Red Mill Inn each year, and we have a blast Saturday night. The Chinese restaurant won't deliver to us there anymore, and I'm not so sure about the pizza place either...(j/k).
Here's the number to call for reservations: 302-645-9736.

Okay, I have the pricing for the shirts, and it's $20 for sizes S through XL and $25 for XXL. I'll be taking orders until August 21, so place your orders soon!
Bob Mac and Jay, I have your orders noted.
Thanks!

If anybody plans on camping like myself. The campground I stayed at last year wasn't bad. It's only a short bike ride to the state park. Another plus was since I was on a bike they didn't charge me an entrance fee. Not that I remember anyway. I didn't have a problem getting a site there with only a few days notice. I generally know about a week before I go, weather I'm going to make it or not. Anyway here's the skinny on the campground.
Big oaks family campground
35567 Big oaks lane
Rehoboth Beach De.

Phone (302)-645-6838
Hope to see a good turn out and good weather.crt.

I just booked my room at the Red Mill Inn, and they still have a few left. If you plan to get a room there for the rally, I wouldn't wait too much longer (especially since that weekend is Delmarva Bike Week).

We're two and a half weeks away from the rally, and I'm happy to say that initial reports indicate that Hurricane Irene hasn't left the park (Cape Henlopen) in a shambles. I was afraid of major destruction that would require postponement of this year's rally.
So the good news is - we're still on!
I'd like to get somewhat of a head count, so who is planning to make the trip to the rally?

Here are some of the things we have planned. Jay offered to lead a "fast ride" down to a local shore town (probably Rehoboth or Dewey Beach). There will be a "slow ride" around the town of Lewes. Well, "slow ride" if you don't count the 35mph stretch between the park and Lewes.
We plan to have a ride out to the Irish Eyes Pub and Restaurant in Lewes for lunch, or possibly a picnic lunch at the park. In fact we could possibly do both, depending on the interest.
If there is enough interest I could arrange for a tour of the Fort Miles Historic Site and Battery 519. Battery 519 is a WWII Coastal Artillery bunker buried under the dunes and has been going through a massive restoration to original WWII configuration. The progress on this restoration has been nothing short of remarkable within the past year.
Maybe we could also get a shot of a bunch of our bikes lined up as if to go on the Cape May - Lewes Ferry. I've been thinking of getting that shot since the first of these rallies.
Also, the trophies are in and they look fantastic! Jay and Bob Mac, I have your shirts for you and will bring them to the rally rather than mailing them and having them not arrive in time.
