Hey Chain,
Surprised nobody chimed in on this new clutch. Looks like a cool part. You going to buy one and test it out for everybody?
Problem comes down to keeping the left side handlebar free for a clutch lever. To me that means using a coaster brake in the rear or one of those balance dual cable levers to run both front and rear brake from the right side handlebar lever.

Chain,
I converted my 2 cyl build from auto clutch to manual. It had a pull start and now I can bump start it. I also put a guard over the old pull start. I have been meaning to post it but just been to busy to take pics. This is a few before pics.

i also made a different manual clutch setup for the 79cc HF engine in the past. It is not as pretty as the one you were looking at but it worked.

I can't even imagine why someone would want to choose pedal starting a 4-stroke.

The vintage guys like the pedal start as it replicates old motorcycle technology. Also, wrapping a rope around a flywheel reminds everyone of starting a lawn mower. I prefer electric start myself but that adds cost and complication and so far is only practical on the GX200's. The HF79 and GC160 don't have standard electric start systems available. To me this seems like a very cool product.
I had a china two stroke that I could lift the rear tire off the ground and kick start it. I would guess you could kick start a manual clutch 4 stroke if the rear wheel is off the ground on a nice solid stand.
Once I get my hands on one of these clutches I'll be doing burnouts, wheelies, and donuts!

But doesn't a pedal start automatic kind of defeat the purpose of a motorized bicycle? Then the pedals just become a two sided kickstart... No pedaling with the engine off. I'd like to see a flywheel nut bearing combo to setup a kickstart or a spring loaded kick pedal, wind it down and let the spring do the work. I really like my pullstart because of the engine died in traffic i can get it started again immediately. But I'd like to get rid of the shroud.

I don't like the pull start as it always reminds me of a lawn mower.
If the engine stops while I am @ a traffic light, I don't want to hold up traffic while I pull start.
One or two strokes of the pedal and I'm off and the traffic doesn't even notice.

I know a few guys bought these clutches ..Velodrome is one of them. Nobody has used it on a bicycle yet ...or they haven't shared it.

It looks like one of the more solid designs for a clutch, I have a mb with a manual clutch and like it... But then again it's needed for the 5 speed gear box.

Not sure if you have watched the video with the go kart, seems the engine bogs at low rpm and the driver needs to slip the clutch to get in the power band, how long will the clutch disk last with doing this most of the time. I like it but then again I can wait to hear the reviews.

Heck, gears change everything, I build far more shifters than direct drives these days regardless of power type.

Anyway, I put in my 2¢ worth and still find it silly ;-}

I might try this on my chopper bike if I ever get around to making a 212 engine mount for it. Manual clutch is good for motors that don't need high rpm engagement like small two strokes. I think this clutch plus gears would work nicely to have smoother power transmission to the fragile bike derailleur or geared hub and the ability to cruise in overdrive and decelerate without the clutch disengaging.

Nah. Not me ( yet ) I bought the Downs Brothers Racing unit thats going on my Flying Merkel build once I get back to it. The DBR clutches like I have were famous for unreliability at higher HP applications HF 212's and bigger on karts and mini bikes. GO MOTO! Git you one and let us know!

I picked up one of these manual clutches for a future GC160 build. It will be awhile before I get to it but will put one of these new manual clutches through it's paces.
