flying horse seams like the clear choice now for a 2 stroke 66cc im so happy with mine out of the box only difference is im running the muffler off my grubee on it still because i crushed it to fit my frame and put a custom cap on it love the power it makes though and the sound is fantastic
I totally agree. This is the best motor I've had. My second best was also a Flying Horse. I think Flying Horse will be my first choice from now on.

Last night I went riding with the new tuning. New tuning is, 50:1 ratio. Needle in leanest position. 68 jet. Speed carb.

It runs drastically different after this change. Instead of starting instantly with no choke, and running well from cold, now it's hard starting cold with no choke. Warm up now takes a long time. After warm up is complete, it idles well. The spark plug looks great. Dark tan/brown. The way it's running now seems a lot more normal than the way it's been running.

After it gets fully warmed up, It runs well. The top end is great.

The bottom end seems maybe a little weak, but it may be normal for a speed carb, and crappy exhaust. What's different about the bottom end compared to before changing the needle position is, now is it's running smooth with no 4 stroking.

I'm pretty sure the gas mileage will go up, but I haven't proved that yet. I was getting about 80 mpg before, cruising about 25. Now I want to see 120 mpg or close to it.
I notice in the above I made a typo. Instead of a 68 jet, I meant to say a 66 jet.

I got to go on a fairly long ride today. Long enough to get a good feel for the way it runs and the fuel mileage. On this ride I got about 124 mpg. That's 50% better mileage than with the 68 jet. I was only getting 80 mpg before. That was cruising mostly between 25, and 30 with not much 30. I think that's the best mileage I've gotten from any of my 80 motors. It's amazing how much difference one jet size can make.

Performance wise it's running great. It has more than 600 miles on now.
Cruising at 30, if I see the traffic light fixing to change, I can gas it, and it accelerates so hard that most of the time I can make the light lol. It pulls good from the bottom to the top.

I passed a couple today, riding their 50cc scooters like I was riding a motorcycle, oops don't let the fuzz know. Made me feel kind of guilty, having that much performance, and them needing a license plate.

I believe this is about all I'm going to do to this motor, so I guess this is about it for this thread.

This is the final summery

36T sprocket
35+ mph. I don't care to find out how much over 35 it will do, but it's been to 37 a couple of times. I doubt it would do 40 though.
50:1 Red Line synthetic
Speed carb
66 jet
Needle clip in second from the top position.
Modified stock muffler. (removed the cat) Still very quiet.
NGK BP6HS spark plug.
124 MPG

I've got a question. With the kit from Bike berry they list three different carbs, the NT, a high performance carb, and the CNS, is one better than the other?
This will be my first bike build, (I've done a few cars),I'm looking for reliability, not speed. I'm just not quite sure about these 2 stroke motors

Everyone loves the NT. It's easy to tune, and works well. The CNS is hard to tune and not well liked.

I'm not sure what carb they're talking about as the performance carb, but if it's a speed carb that's a good one too.

The difference between the NT and a Speed carb is, the NT has a 2mm smaller venturi. The NT has a little better bottom end throttle response, the Speed carb has a little better top end response. Both of these carbs are easy to tune.

the regular NT is great i love it i have a newer NT CNS (wanted the speed they sent this) as they call it its a mix of the two and its almost as bad as the CNS but with fewer useless hoses sticking out. the CNS unless you want to frustrate yourself drill out the mix plug and get a set of jets it usually wont work. i say the old NT is still the best option i haven't had a speed carb yet but anything with the stupid remote choke that dumps fuel into the engine dosent seem like it belongs on these engines.

Had a false alarm tonight. I rode up to target, and since I have temporarily disconnected my kill switch, I turn it off by flipping on the choke. When I came out, I rode off and tried to start it. It fired and died, and then wouldn't restart. I'm so paranoid about the mag coil going bad, I thought another one must have died because it normally starts easy. I pedaled a couple of blocks thinking evil thoughts, before I remembered the choke was on lol.

The problem you encountered isn't limited to Flying Horse. Any motor kit has about the same odds of that happening. That's why it's important to at least partially disassemble the motor, just to see what you can find, and fix.

I haven't been impressed with the last 4 BGF motors I bought. They all had crappy crankshafts, and one had bad transmission shaft bearings. This one seems better than all of those.
Had the same issues with my bgf. Crank runout was about 3/32". Plastic shavings in cylinder, case, and carb. Intake is about 1/4 blocked at tdc, about 1/3 of transfer ports blocked by poor casting, ports are angled. Metal shavings behind bearings, and throughout engine. I even had a piece of newspaper in the case. Clutch was seized on arrival, with shattered clutch shaft bearings. Sealed bearings on the crank. Bottom end leak. Overall i would say terrible. I think it would almost be cheaper to buy individual parts like the body/crank/etc and buy higher quality parts like bearings elsewhere

I tried buying several crankshafts to build one motor with a good crank, and all the crankshafts I got were just as bad as the original.

I have a brand new BGF motor in pieces now, with no crank to put in it.

My Flying Horse motor is running great though.

I see... I managed to send enough emails that i got one with very little run out. Its a single-piece (actually 3 piece) to replace a bolt on weight crank. Visually the run out seems ok, but this crank is about 1/4" shorter overall, although i will have to wait till monday to get measurements. Initially i wanted a better crank to measure to make my own. I could machine cranks at work, for forum members, at price=mat'l cost+shipping+$10/hr labor.

I have well over a thousand miles on my Flying Horse now, and it's running better than ever. I cruise about 32 mph, and sometimes 35. It's good for 35 any day of the week, but I try not to. I'm getting about 120 mpg now. A little less if I spend a lot time over 30 mph.

I'm so happy with the way it runs I don't feel much need to try to soup it up, but I wouldn't mind a little more bottom end. I might think about a xpipe sometime, but that's about it.

Last weekend I rode with a friend on his china girl. His is fairly high performance and runs over 40 mph. I spent a lot of time that day running over 35 mph. He mentioned several times how quiet my bike is.

This is the thread that helped me in deciding what brand motor kit to get :)
Hope yours is as good as mine has been. I'm up to about 1500 miles now, and it's running great.

I'm fixing to build a new bike with my other new Flying Horse motor. I'll report about how it compares to this one.

Biknut you are my favorite author! Your thread was very informative and quite entertaining. I just ordered a Flying Horse from Bikeberry because of your post. Though I know my experience will not be identical to yours I know with a little bit of skill and patience I will have fun. Thanks!

My pleasure. When you get it, start a thread and we can all help you avoid some of the pitfalls.

That is actually where I got mine due to a lucky windfall I came into just enough cash to purchase the kit. I figure that I will be tinkering around with just setting it up and learning about it long enough to afford some needed upgrades. Biknut would you recommend replacing the gaskets right away or will they hold a while? I plan on checking everything you recommended but am not sure about new gaskets right off the bat.
