Anyone ever run into a fairly simple way to convert a standard bike wheel/hub into a "wheelman" style axle pedal assembly? You know like on the big wheels we grew up with, where the pedals are attached directly to the axle, no chain involved? I am trying to brainstorm some way to build some thing like that with a freewheel on it. So the pedals aren't always cranking on me. Any thoughts or ideas are welcome.

Newer "big wheels" have a freewheel built into the crank. I've wanted to build a motorized big wheel for a long time now. You can youtube motorized big wheel and see some ideas...

Unicycle hubs have come up in my search for answers, but I still have not found any sort of DIY info. The unicycle types all agree it is cheaper to buy one than to make one.

My question as I think about this, is a standard bike axle rugged enough to handle cranks if I can figure out how to lock it and freewheel it?
