I am thinking about building a motorized bike. This would be my first. Is a single speed bike OK? Or should I be looking for an old 3 speed bike? I thought about using an SD Stinger motor. Am I on the right track, any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum. IMHO, single speed bike is fine for a gas motor.
I would use a multispeed wheel if you are going electric.
Use a front brake in either case.

Thanks for the tip. I hadn't thought about the brakes. Will the rear coaster brake work OK with the gas motor?

Boy, mine sure does... It's saved me from crazy drivers talking on cell phones many times.

The only disadvantage to the coaster is that you can't wind the pedals backward to give yourself a nice high pedal push-off to start. You have to roll the bike forward or back to get the pedal up. No big crisis, just annoying to remember to do it while you're stopped.
